📐 How Premium is Calculated

Step 1: Calculate Total Sum Insured
Total Sum Insured = Sum Insured per Ha × Land Area
Total Sum Insured = ₹72,000 × 2.5 ha = ₹1,80,000
Step 2: Calculate Total Actuarial Premium
Total Premium = Total Sum Insured × (Actuarial Rate ÷ 100)
Total Premium = ₹1,80,000 × (12.5 ÷ 100) = ₹22,500
Step 3: Calculate Farmer’s Premium (Based on Season)
For Kharif: Farmer Premium = Total Sum Insured × 2%
Farmer Premium = ₹1,80,000 × 2% = ₹3,600

For Rabi: Farmer pays 1.5%
For Commercial: Farmer pays 5%
Step 4: Calculate Government Subsidy
Government Subsidy = Total Premium – Farmer Premium
Government Subsidy = ₹22,500 – ₹3,600 = ₹18,900

Central Government Share = ₹18,900 ÷ 2 = ₹9,450
State Government Share = ₹18,900 ÷ 2 = ₹9,450
YOU PAY: ₹3,600
GOVERNMENT PAYS: ₹18,900

💡 5 Pro Tips to Maximize Your PMFBY Benefits

Expert strategies to save more money, file claims faster, and make the most of PM Fasal Bima Yojana insurance

📅

Tip #1: Enroll BEFORE the Deadline

🗓️ Deadline Timing:
Kharif (Monsoon): July 31st | Rabi (Winter): December 31st | Commercial: Varies by crop

Why This Matters: Many farmers wait until the last week and miss enrollment entirely. Once the deadline passes, you cannot enroll for that season – meaning NO insurance coverage for that year. Late enrollment rejections are automatic.

✅ DO THIS:

  • Enroll in first week of season
  • Get official receipt/acknowledgment
  • Set phone reminder for next year

❌ AVOID THIS:

  • Waiting until last few days
  • Missing deadline entirely
  • Enrolling after deadline starts

💰 Money Impact: Missing deadline = ₹0 insurance coverage for entire season. If crop fails, you lose ₹1-10 lakh depending on farm size. Enrolling early = guaranteed coverage.

🛒

Tip #2: Use Multi-Crop Cart to Plan Entire Farm

🌾 Multi-Crop Feature:
Add wheat, gram, paddy, cotton all in ONE calculation. See total cost per farm instead of crop-by-crop.

Why This Matters: Most farmers grow 2-3 crops per season. Calculating each crop separately is confusing. Our multi-crop cart shows TOTAL premium for entire farm – making budgeting easier. You can also prioritize which crops to insure if budget is tight.

📊 Example Strategy:

Farm: 5 hectares
• Paddy (2 ha) → ₹3,060
• Wheat (2 ha) → ₹2,040
• Cotton (1 ha) → ₹1,625
TOTAL: ₹6,725 (Your cost)

Without cart: You’d need 3 separate calculations. With cart: One click, all crops calculated!

💰 Money Impact: Multi-crop cart helps you see which crops need insurance most. Insure high-value crops (Sugarcane: ₹98K/ha) while skipping low-value (Millet: ₹20K/ha) if budget is tight.

🌧️

Tip #3: Understand Prevented Sowing Benefit

❌ What is Prevented Sowing?
If excessive rain/drought/flood prevents you from sowing, you get 25% of sum insured WITHOUT need for CCE survey.

Why This Matters: This is HUGE benefit most farmers don’t know about. If you can’t sow due to weather, you can claim within 7 days – much faster than normal claims. No need to wait for harvest & crop damage assessment.

📋 Prevented Sowing Scenarios:

Excessive Monsoon Rain: Can’t sow paddy in July
Severe Drought: Can’t sow wheat due to no water
Flood/Waterlogging: Fields submerged for >2 weeks
Unseasonal Weather: Unexpected cold/hail before sowing
Pest/Disease Outbreak: Seed germination failure (in some cases)

✅ BENEFITS:

  • 25% SI instant payout
  • No field survey needed
  • Fast settlement (5-10 days)

⚠️ REQUIREMENTS:

  • File claim within 7 days
  • Submit weather proof
  • Officer verification needed

💰 Money Impact: 2-hectare paddy farm → ₹1,44,000 SI. If prevented sowing = ₹36,000 claim instantly. That’s 2-3 months of farm expenses covered without waiting for harvest!

📋

Tip #4: Prepare Claim Documents BEFORE Loss Occurs

📦 Ready Your Documents:
Don’t wait for crop failure to gather documents. Prepare everything now while you’re stress-free!

Why This Matters: When crop fails, you’re stressed & need fast claim approval. Having documents ready = instant submission = faster payout. Missing documents delay claims by weeks/months. Agriculture officers are swamped – early birds get served first!

✅ Documents to Prepare NOW:

✓ Aadhaar Card
Get digital copy + print 2 extra copies
✓ Land Records
Form 7A or Pattadar Pass Book (certified copy)
✓ Bank Account Details
Passbook first page photocopy
✓ PMFBY Certificate
Enrollment confirmation (Save SMS/printout)
✓ Sowing Proof Photos
Take photos of sown field during season
✓ Seed/Fertilizer Receipt
Proof of investment in farming

📅 Document Timeline:

NOW (Before Season): Prepare Aadhaar, Land Records, Bank details, PMFBY cert
DURING Sowing: Take field photos, keep receipts
AFTER Loss: Just gather loss photos & file claim – rest is ready!

💰 Money Impact: Farmers with ready documents get approved 2-3 weeks faster. That’s 2-3 weeks earlier money hits bank account. Missing docs = automatic rejection, need to reapply, lose money during gap!

🏢

Tip #5: Know Your Insurance Company & File Early

🏢 Which Company Insures You?
Each state has specific insurer. Our calculator shows your company & helpline. Save it!

Why This Matters: Different insurers have different claim processes. Some are fast (AIC, ICICI), others slow. Knowing your company helps you file quickly. Your PMFBY calculator shows your company’s helpline – SAVE IT in your phone NOW!

📞 State-wise Insurance Companies:

Maharashtra
AIC India

✅ When You Need to File Claim:

Within 24 Hours: Inform local agriculture officer (block level)
Within 72 Hours: Contact insurance company helpline + provide details
Within 7 Days: File official claim form (get from company or download)
Attach: All your prepared documents from Tip #4

✅ FAST Claim Process:

  • File within 24-48 hours
  • Use online portal if available
  • Follow up with officer weekly

❌ SLOW Claim Process:

  • Wait weeks to file claim
  • Submit incomplete documents
  • Don’t follow up with officer

💰 Money Impact: Fast claim filing = Approval within 6-8 weeks. Slow claim filing = Approval within 4-6 months or rejection. That’s 2-4 months difference when you need money most to plan next crop!

Comprehensive answers to all your PMFBY questions – coverage, enrollment, claims, premiums, and more

📌 General Information About PMFBY

1. What is PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)? +
PMFBY is India’s government-sponsored crop insurance scheme launched in 2016. It provides comprehensive coverage against natural calamities (floods, drought, hailstorms), pests, and diseases with heavily subsidized premiums. Farmers pay only 2% (Kharif), 1.5% (Rabi), or 5% (Commercial) of the sum insured, while the government covers the rest.
2. Which states are covered under PMFBY? +
All 28 Indian states + Union territories are covered: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Each state has multiple districts with specific crops and rates.
3. Who is eligible for PMFBY? +
All farmers are eligible: Small farmers, marginal farmers, large farmers, tenant farmers, and sharecroppers. Whether you own the land or work on someone else’s land, you can enroll. No age limit, no income limit. If you have a crop loan (KCC), enrollment is often mandatory.
4. What crops are covered under PMFBY? +
50+ crops across 3 seasons:
🌾 Kharif (Monsoon): Paddy, Cotton, Soybean, Bajra, Jowar, Groundnut

💰 Premiums, Subsidies & Costs

6. What is the farmer’s premium rate? +
Based on crop season:
🌾 Kharif crops: 2% of sum insured
❄️ Rabi crops: 1.5% of sum insured
🌳 Commercial/Horticultural: 5% of sum insured

Example: Paddy (Kharif) with ₹1,80,000 sum insured → You pay 2% = ₹3,600. Government pays ₹16,900!
7. What is government subsidy? +
Government subsidy is the remaining premium (after your payment) split equally between Central and State governments (50:50). Example: Total premium ₹22,500 – Your payment ₹3,600 = ₹18,900 subsidy. Central govt pays ₹9,450, State govt pays ₹9,450. This massive subsidy makes crop insurance affordable for farmers.
8. What is the sum insured per hectare? +
Sum insured per hectare varies by crop and district, typically ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹1,20,000. It’s calculated based on average crop value in that district. Examples: Paddy ₹72,000/ha | Wheat ₹68,000/ha | Sugarcane ₹98,000/ha | Maize ₹48,000/ha. Our calculator auto-fills the correct rate for your crop/district.
9. What is actuarial rate? +
Actuarial rate is the risk-based premium percentage calculated by insurance companies based on historical crop loss data in that district. High-risk crops pay higher rates. Example rates: Paddy 12.5% (moderate risk) | Cotton 13.2% (higher risk) | Wheat 8.3% (lower risk). It’s not set by government but by insurance experts analyzing past 10-20 years of claims data.
10. Does premium vary by farm size? +
No. Premium rate is same for all farmers (2% Kharif, 1.5% Rabi, 5% Commercial) regardless of farm size. However, total premium AMOUNT increases with land area. Example: 1 ha farmer pays ₹1,440 | 5 ha farmer pays ₹7,200. Rate is same (2%), but total cost is proportional to farm size.

📅 Enrollment & Deadlines

11. What are the enrollment deadlines? +
Fixed deadlines every year:
🌾 Kharif (Monsoon crops): July 31st
❄️ Rabi (Winter crops): December 31st
🌳 Commercial crops: Varies by crop (check with agriculture dept)

IMPORTANT: After deadline, no new enrollments allowed for that season. Missing deadline = zero coverage for entire year. Plan ahead!
12. How to enroll in PMFBY? +
3 enrollment methods:
1️⃣ Official Website: www.pmfby.gov.in – Self-registration online
2️⃣ Common Service Center (CSC): Visit local CSC agent with Aadhaar & Land records
3️⃣ Bank: If you have crop loan (KCC), bank does enrollment automatically

Get official enrollment certificate/acknowledgment for records.
13. Can I enroll multiple crops? +
Yes! You can enroll multiple crops on your farm. Our multi-crop calculator makes this easy – add wheat, gram, and paddy all in one cart and see total cost. Just submit separate enrollments for each crop/area combination to PMFBY portal or CSC.
14. What documents are needed for enrollment? +
Required documents:
✓ Aadhaar Card
✓ Land ownership proof (Form 7A / Pattadar Pass Book)
✓ Bank account details (passbook)
✓ Crop details (what you’re growing)
✓ Land area in hectares
Tip: Prepare these NOW before enrollment deadline!

🌾 Coverage & Types of Losses

15. What losses are covered under PMFBY? +
All major natural calamities are covered:
☔ Excessive/deficient rainfall (drought/flood)
🌪️ Hailstorm, Windstorm, Cyclone
❄️ Unseasonable frost/cold
🔥 Lightning strike
🐛 Pest/disease attacks
🌊 Landslide or inundation
🚜 Post-harvest loss (14 days after harvesting during drying/threshing)
NOT covered: War, terrorism, negligence, intentional damage
16. What is prevented sowing? +
Prevented Sowing: If excessive rain/drought/flood prevents you from sowing the crop, you get 25% of sum insured as compensation WITHOUT needing a survey. Claim process: File within 7 days → Get fast payout (5-10 days). Example: ₹1,80,000 SI → ₹45,000 claim if you can’t sow due to drought. Much faster than normal claims!
17. What is post-harvest loss? +
Post-Harvest Loss: Losses occurring during drying, threshing, or processing within 14 days of harvesting are covered. Example: Heavy rain during crop drying damages harvest → You’re covered. Losses beyond 14 days are NOT covered (stored grain damage). This is valuable especially for rain-prone areas!
18. What is minimum loss threshold? +
Minimum loss threshold varies by crop: typically 20-30% yield loss is required before claim is approved. Example: If you should harvest 10 tons but get only 7 tons (30% loss), you qualify for claim. Minor losses below threshold are not covered. Government uses district-level yield data to determine actual loss percentage.

📋 Claim Filing & Process

19. How to file a claim? +
Step-by-step claim process:
1️⃣ Within 24 hours of loss: Inform local agriculture officer (block level)
2️⃣ Within 72 hours: Contact insurance company helpline + provide details
3️⃣ Within 7 days: Fill official claim form (available at insurance office or online)
4️⃣ Attach: Aadhaar, Land records, Bank details, Photos of loss, PMFBY enrollment cert
5️⃣ Submit: At insurance office or upload online
6️⃣ Wait: Assessment (15-30 days) → Approval → Payout (usually within 45-90 days)
20. How long does claim settlement take? +
Timeline:
⏱️ Prevented Sowing: 5-10 days (fastest)
⏱️ Normal claims: 45-90 days average
⏱️ Complex cases: Up to 6 months

According to PMFBY guidelines: Claims should be settled within 30 days of submission. However, actual time varies by insurance company, number of claims, and documentation completeness. Having all documents ready BEFORE loss occurs speeds up settlement!
21. What is CCE (Crop Cutting Experiment)? +
CCE Assessment: Government officer visits your field, cuts samples of your crop, weighs them, and calculates actual yield loss percentage. This data determines your claim amount. Process: Officer collects samples from multiple farmers in same area → Compares with expected yield → If loss ≥ threshold → Claim approved. CCE is NOT needed for prevented sowing claims (which is why they’re faster).
22. What are claim settlement statistics? +
National PMFBY performance (2023-24):
📊 Settlement ratio: 85-92% (varies by state)
📊 Average settlement days: 45-60 days
📊 Total claims paid: ₹2000+ crore annually
Better performers: Maharashtra (89% settlement), Punjab (87%), UP (85%)
Our calculator shows real district-wise settlement statistics to help you understand claim reliability!
23. What if my claim is rejected? +
If claim rejected, you can:
1️⃣ Appeal to insurance company within 30 days (ask for reasons in writing)
2️⃣ Contact agriculture department for dispute resolution
3️⃣ File complaint with Insurance Ombudsman (free grievance redressal)
4️⃣ Contact state PMFBY nodal agency

Common rejection reasons: Late filing (>7-14 days), incomplete documents, loss below threshold, non-coverage events. That’s why filing EARLY with complete documents is crucial!
