Frequently Asked Questions

Which tax regime should I choose, new or old?
Choose whichever gives you lower tax. The new regime wins for most people, especially with income up to 12 lakh, thanks to its lower rates and the 12 lakh rebate. The old regime only wins if your deductions beyond the standard deduction exceed roughly 3.75 to 4.25 lakh. Use the Old vs New Regime calculator to compare.
Is income up to 12 lakh really tax-free?
Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, the enhanced Section 87A rebate makes a taxable income up to 12 lakh effectively tax-free (12.75 lakh for salaried people after the 75,000 standard deduction). Above that, tax applies on the full amount with marginal relief near the threshold.
How is capital gains tax calculated in India?
It depends on the asset and holding period. Listed equity and equity funds are taxed at 12.5% long-term (above 1.25 lakh exemption) and 20% short-term. Property, gold and debt have their own rules and, in some cases, indexation. Use the Capital Gains calculator for your specific asset.
Do I need to pay GST as a freelancer?
GST registration is generally required once your turnover crosses 20 lakh (10 lakh in some states), though it can be voluntary below that. The Freelance GST calculator helps you work out what to charge and remit.
Can I claim both HRA and a home loan?
Yes, in certain situations, for example if you rent in one city and own a home in another, or rent and own in the same city with genuine reason. The HRA vs Home Loan calculator shows how the two interact and what you can claim.
